SYMPHYSIS is an immersive, experimental performance created by Ethan Chin, that looks at the duality of immigration experiences through the unique lenses of hope and nostalgia. By physically separating the performance space into 2 different stages, the show invites audiences to witness a similar narrative from two contrasting perspectives. One stage embodies the hope and opportunity that comes from a new beginning, while the other reflects on the longing for familiarity and drift from cultural roots. Mid-way through the experience, the audience transitions between the 2 spaces to then experience the same narrative once again from the other perspective to witness the emotional and sensory contrast.
Drawing from real-life stories collected documentary-style with immigrants to the US, the show integrates theater, dance, lighting, film, and music to create a multifaceted representation of these experiences. Performers physicalize the emotions and themes expressed throughout the interviews, and contrasting lighting, sound, video, scenic design spans the stages reinforcing the duality present in the narrative. The original score mirrors these undertones and staging blurs the lines between the audience and the performers, creating an intimate, but also large-scale production.
This show challenges the audience to move past surface-level judgement and embrace the complexity of immigration experiences. By presenting 2 different sides of the same narrative, this performance underscores the importance of perspective and the richness of individual experiences. This contemporary exploration of immigration and its many themes aims to foster an increased understanding and empathy to remind us that every story is worth being told.
